The announcement that Louisiana's Marc Broussard will make his Australian debut on the City Recital Hall stage this month is possibly the best news to come out of the US in a hot minute. His Southern sound blends R&B, rock, soul and blues, and this gig will showcase classic hits as well as new material from his latest studio album.

Supporting Broussard will be blues musician Karen Lee Andrews, whose influences span from gospel to soul, with a refreshingly raw vocal quality that pushes her storytelling into a visceral and powerful place. Tickets are online from $79.

In The Next Room, Or The Vibrator Play

New Theatre, 542 King Street, Newtown | Tuesday 22 April–Saturday 17 May

A new bill in Texas is poised to potentially make it harder to purchase an “obscene device” than a gun. It seems there’s still controversy around our bestie on the bedside table, as sexuality remains a prominent political playing chip. But where did all this buzz begin?

Head to the New this month for Sarah Ruhl’s historical fiction about the early cure for female “hysteria” and the role of personal massagers in male-centric medicine. Without giving too much away, actor Sarah Greenwood assures us: "it's definitely a vibe." Tickets from $25.

Jazz: NOW—Ep.2 WOOD & FIRE

The Vanguard, 42 King Street, Newtown | Wednesday 23 April, 7pm

Sandy Evans' (OAM) saxophones will complement bassist Steve Elphick and find musical fusion with Satsuki Odamura on the koto, bringing folkloric melodies to the fore. Exploring an intersection of electronic and acoustic sounds, you'll also catch double bassist Ben Ward, cellist Freya Schack-Arnott, and Mattias Schack-Arnott on percussion and electronics. Tickets from $25.
